The sign must come like dawn. You cannot see its arrival, but know when it is there.
–Diane Wakoski

Let us take a break, sit by the river, and watch the current quietly flow. Let’s just think, for a moment, about where the current is going, the shores it will brush on its way, the clouds reflected on its surface, the animals that come to drink from it, the bobbers it gently nudges downstream.

Our lives sometimes seem like the river, wandering to the west, the south, back toward the east, seemingly without direction at all. Yet we can take comfort in this thought for, like the river, we are always headed in the direction we are meant to go. Without trying, without knowing, we are part of the larger pattern of things, and we nourish many others just by passing through their lives.

What shores will my life touch today?

Daily Bible Readings From The Universal Life Church World Headquarters

Universal Life Church Daily Thought and Daily Bible Readings

Reading 1, First Corinthians 12:12-14, 27-31

12 For as with the human body which is a unity although it has many parts — all the parts of the body, though many, still making up one single body — so it is with Christ.

13 We were baptised into one body in a single Spirit, Jews as well as Greeks, slaves as well as free men, and we were all given the same Spirit to drink.

14 And indeed the body consists not of one member but of many.

27 Now Christ’s body is yourselves, each of you with a part to play in the whole.

28 And those whom God has appointed in the Church are, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers; after them, miraculous powers, then gifts of healing, helpful acts, guidance, various kinds of tongues.

29 Are all of them apostles? Or all prophets? Or all teachers? Or all miracle-workers?

30 Do all have the gifts of healing? Do all of them speak in tongues and all interpret them?

31 Set your mind on the higher gifts. And now I am going to put before you the best way of all.

Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 100:1-2, 3, 4, 5

1 [Psalm For thanksgiving] Acclaim Yahweh, all the earth,

2 serve Yahweh with gladness, come into his presence with songs of joy!

3 Be sure that Yahweh is God, he made us, we belong to him, his people, the flock of his sheepfold.

4 Come within his gates giving thanks, to his courts singing praise, give thanks to him and bless his name!

5 For Yahweh is good, his faithful love is everlasting, his constancy from age to age.

Gospel, Luke 7:11-17

11 It happened that soon afterwards he went to a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a great number of people.

12 Now when he was near the gate of the town there was a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a considerable number of the townspeople was with her.

13 When the Lord saw her he felt sorry for her and said to her, ‘Don’t cry.’

14 Then he went up and touched the bier and the bearers stood still, and he said, ‘Young man, I tell you: get up.’

15 And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother.

16 Everyone was filled with awe and glorified God saying, ‘A great prophet has risen up among us; God has visited his people.’

17 And this view of him spread throughout Judaea and all over the countryside.

18 The disciples of John gave him all this news, and John, summoning two of his disciples,

19 sent them to the Lord to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?’

Ordination

A vocation is a fruit that ripens in a well cultivated field of mutual love that becomes mutual service, in the context of an authentic ecclesial life. No vocation is born of itself or lives for itself. A vocation flows from the heart of God and blossoms in the good soil of faithful people, in the experience of fraternal love. We are designed with a dreaming brain and a hopeful spirit; it is our nature to envision the life of our dreams. And while dreaming comes easy to us, we must never forget that it takes strength, dedication, and courageous action to bring that dream to life.

Do you wish to pursue a vocation in ministry – become a minister, get ordained or serve as a wedding officiant? We provide ordination to men and women enabling work in all facets of Christian Ministry with ministers in the USA, Canada, UK, Africa, South America, Germany, India, France, Switzerland, Thailand, Japan, Australia, China, Mexico and many other countries throughout the world.

He felt frightened at being different from his brothers and sisters. It scared him to be different.
—E. B. White

How ugly and wrong it makes us feel to be different: to be tall when others are short, slow when others are fast, black when others are white.

The miracle, and paradox, is that everyone is different – and that is what makes us all the same.

When we think honestly about the people we admire – friends, sports heroes, actors, musicians, parents, teachers, employers – we know that all of them, as human beings, not heroes, have felt out of place in their lives, probably many times.

Believing we are alone or different cuts us off from others. Climbing over that protective wall of “differentness” is scary, but it is guaranteed to set us free.

How can I let go of my “differentness” today?

Universal Life Church Daily Thought and Daily Bible Readings

Reading 1, Hebrews 5:7-9

7 During his life on earth, he offered up prayer and entreaty, with loud cries and with tears, to the one who had the power to save him from death, and, winning a hearing by his reverence,

8 he learnt obedience, Son though he was, through his sufferings;

9 when he had been perfected, he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation

Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 31:2-3, 3-4, 5-6, 15-16, 20

2 turn your ear to me, make haste. Be for me a rock-fastness, a fortified citadel to save me.

3 You are my rock, my rampart; true to your name, lead me and guide me!

4 Draw me out of the net they have spread for me, for you are my refuge;

5 to your hands I commit my spirit, by you have I been redeemed. God of truth,

6 you hate those who serve useless idols; but my trust is in Yahweh:

15 every moment of my life is in your hands, rescue me from the clutches of my foes who pursue me;

16 let your face shine on your servant, save me in your faithful love.

20 Safe in your presence you hide them, far from human plotting, shielding them in your tent, far from contentious tongues.

Gospel, John 19:25-27

25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.

26 Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’

27 Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

No yesterdays are ever wasted for those who give themselves today.
—Brendan Francis

We often find ourselves yearning for tomorrow. We get carried away thinking about the next day’s big game or camping trip. We find ourselves daydreaming about how much fun we’ll have with friends or what animals we’ll see in the park.

The next day comes and perhaps the excitement about the game diminishes because our friends can’t make it or the camping trip is cancelled because of bad weather. We feel cheated and begin regretting the missed opportunities of yesterday.

When we find ourselves concentrating only on tomorrow, we need to stop and look around. We’ll begin to notice the joke a friend is telling, or the bird flying overhead. We will begin appreciating the joys of the moment.

When we live in the moment, we have no expectations about the next moment, and without expectations, we can’t be disappointed, only surprised.

What is delightful about this moment right now?

Daily Bible Readings From The Universal Life Church World Headquarters

Universal Life Church Daily Thought and Daily Bible Readings

Reading 1, First Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-27

16 In fact, preaching the gospel gives me nothing to boast of, for I am under compulsion and I should be in trouble if I failed to do it.

17 If I did it on my own initiative I would deserve a reward; but if I do it under compulsion I am simply accepting a task entrusted to me.

18 What reward do I have, then? That in my preaching I offer the gospel free of charge to avoid using the rights which the gospel allows me.

19 So though I was not a slave to any human being, I put myself in slavery to all people, to win as many as I could.

22 To the weak, I made myself weak, to win the weak. I accommodated myself to people in all kinds of different situations, so that by all possible means I might bring some to salvation.

23 All this I do for the sake of the gospel, that I may share its benefits with others.

24 Do you not realise that, though all the runners in the stadium take part in the race, only one of them gets the prize? Run like that — to win.

25 Every athlete concentrates completely on training, and this is to win a wreath that will wither, whereas ours will never wither.

26 So that is how I run, not without a clear goal; and how I box, not wasting blows on air.

27 I punish my body and bring it under control, to avoid any risk that, having acted as herald for others, I myself may be disqualified.

Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 84:3, 4, 5-6, 8, 12

3 Even the sparrow has found a home, the swallow a nest to place its young: your altars, Yahweh Sabaoth, my King and my God.

4 How blessed are those who live in your house; they shall praise you continually. Pause

5 Blessed those who find their strength in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.

6 As they pass through the Valley of the Balsam, they make there a water-hole, and — a further blessing — early rain fills it.

8 Yahweh, God Sabaoth, hear my prayer, listen, God of Jacob.

12 Yahweh Sabaoth, blessed is he who trusts in you.

Gospel, Luke 6:39-42

39 He also told them a parable, ‘Can one blind person guide another? Surely both will fall into a pit?

40 Disciple is not superior to teacher; but fully trained disciple will be like teacher.

41 Why do you observe the splinter in your brother’s eye and never notice the great log in your own?

42 How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take out that splinter in your eye,” when you cannot see the great log in your own? Hypocrite! Take the log out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter in your brother’s eyes.
